Okays, peoplez. This is Emily speaking. (the tall-ish one without the hat)
At the first anime club meeting, everyone saw how excited I was when I put Mononoke up as one of the possibilities for our series.
But, as it didn't get picked, I want to see about arranging a time and place where those who are interested could watch it. (Maybe not all of it, as that would take... let's see, there are 13 episodes... somewhere between 4-6 hours. Yes, I type stream-of-consciousness)
While I may not have it on dvd or any other format (and I have no idea how to go about acquiring it in such a form), I do know where it can be found online and in pretty good quality.
Here's a brief overview of the series, seeing as what I said at the meeting was a little lacking due to time constraints:
Mononoke is a short series taking place in ancient Japan. As to what era, I have no idea. The main character in Mononoke is a nameless man known only as "Kusuriuri" (which can be translated as "Medicine Seller," "Apothecary," "Drug Dealer," etc.). On the surface he is an ordinary medicine seller, albeit one with pointed ears, oddly colored hair and eyes (considering his nationality), and a taste for brightly-colored clothes and unusual makeup.
However, the occupation of "medicine seller" is simply a cover story.
Why?
Because he kills demons.
It is the Kusuriuri's responsibility to find and exorcise mononoke (which I assume means demon, or evil spirit. I don't know the exact meaning). How he does this, I won't say. That's the best part. ;D
What I find interesting about this series is the fact that while the Kusuriuri is always determined to kill the mononoke, he usually doesn't really seem to care about what happens to anyone who gets caught up in everything. Meaning, people die.
We learn next to nothing about the Kusuriuri. No backstory, no huge insights into his personality, nothing. Not even a name.
---
Please note that this anime is not for everyone. Not only is the art style uber "artsy," but the individual arcs (all 5 of them) all deal with issues that are considered controversial. I mean that it uses things like abortion and incest as plot devices.
However, I urge you not let this deter you. It is a beautifully done anime, not to mention the Kusuriuri is voiced by my favorite seiyuu, Takahiro Sakurai (who also voiced Fakir in Princess Tutu, Yuuri Shibuya in Kyou Kara Maou, Sasori in Naruto, Claude Faustus in Black Butler, Suzaku Kururugi in Code Geass, and many others).
If anyone is interested, let me know and we can arrange a day sometime to watch it.
(Everyone is welcome to bug me about this or anything else in person, should you wish. I can usually be found in Inman 323. If need be I will let you in.)
Ok... I think I got everything I needed to say about that. I'll add stuff if anything comes to mind.
